The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Customs Division has warned passengers travelling outside Ghana that they are not permitted to carry more than GH¢500 in Ghanaian currency out of the country.
Revenue Officer at the Accra International Airport Preventive Unit, Conrad Attu, said travellers who exceed the prescribed limit risk having the excess cash seized at the point of departure.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, September 1, Mr Attu said the restriction applies specifically to Ghanaian currency being taken outside the country.
“When travelling outside, outbound passengers are only allowed to carry 500 cedis on them. Beyond that, they might be seized.”
He explained that the regulation is based on the expectation that travellers would use the currency of their destination rather than carry substantial amounts of Ghanaian currency abroad.
“We assume that in the other country, you might not need to have any Ghana cedis. You use the currency of that particular country,” he said.
The clarification forms part of Customs’ broader guidance on the movement of cash and other items across Ghana’s borders.
Customs has urged passengers to familiarise themselves with currency declaration requirements before arriving at the airport to avoid delays or complications during departure.
Travellers who need to make declarations can visit the Customs office at the airport for assistance. Mr Attu also advised passengers carrying significant amounts of cash to complete all necessary procedures before checking in their luggage.
The GH¢500 ceiling applies only to Ghanaian currency being taken out of the country. Foreign currencies are governed by separate declaration requirements.
Customs is therefore urging international travellers to plan their currency needs carefully and seek clarification from Customs officers at the airport whenever they are uncertain about the applicable rules.
