Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have approved a constitutional amendment making the party’s elected presidential candidate its leader.
The amendment was approved through an oral vote at the party’s National Delegates Conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
Known as Motion Number 10, the amendment affects Articles 10, 4, 1 and 13 of the NPP Constitution and formally establishes the elected presidential candidate as the party’s leader when the party has one.
Under the new provision, the presidential candidate shall serve as the leader of the party whenever the NPP has an elected presidential candidate.
Delegates also approved a related provision addressing the party’s leadership when the NPP is in government. Under that arrangement, the sitting President will remain the leader of the party until a new presidential candidate is elected.
The amendment therefore establishes different leadership arrangements depending on the NPP’s position in government and the status of its presidential candidate.
The constitutional changes form part of a broader set of reforms considered at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference, where delegates are also electing national officers for the party. More than 7,000 delegates are participating in the Kumasi conference.
