Businessman and former presidential aspirant Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has declined an appointment reportedly offered by former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia to serve as Co-Chair.
In a letter dated May 8, 2026, addressed to Dr. Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him but stated that he would not be able to accept the role at this time.
“I wish to express my sincere gratitude for the confidence you have reposed in me by considering me for the position of Co-Chair,” the letter stated.
The former Assin Central MP explained that his decision was informed by “personal and strategic reasons” which require his “full attention and commitment elsewhere.”
Despite turning down the appointment, Agyapong emphasized his continued commitment to the progress and unity of the party.
“I remain committed to the progress and unity of our party and will continue to support every genuine effort aimed at strengthening our collective vision for Ghana,” he added.
The development is expected to spark conversations within the party, especially considering the longstanding political relationship and perceived rivalry between Kennedy Agyapong and Dr. Bawumia following the party’s presidential primaries.
Political observers say the decision could signal strategic positioning ahead of future internal political activities, although Agyapong’s statement maintains a conciliatory and respectful tone.
He concluded the letter by wishing Dr. Bawumia “wisdom and success in all your endeavors.”
