Underinvestment Driving Ghana’s Persistent Power Outages – Senyo Hosi

Economic Policy Analyst Senyo Hosi has linked Ghana’s persistent power challenges to chronic underinvestment across the electricity value chain, particularly in generation and distribution infrastructure.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, May 2, Senyo Hosi stressed the urgent need for sustained and strategic financing to strengthen the country’s power systems. He noted that although past investments in power generation helped stabilise supply, infrastructure development has not kept pace with rising demand, leaving the sector exposed to frequent disruptions.

According to him, the focus must now shift toward fixing inefficiencies within the distribution network, where defective infrastructure continues to undermine reliable power delivery. He also pointed to challenges in pricing and technical management, arguing that these issues can only be resolved through increased investment.

His comments come as parts of the country experience intermittent outages, sparking renewed concerns over electricity reliability. The Electricity Company of Ghana has attributed the situation to ongoing transformer maintenance works, while a recent fire outbreak at a substation operated by the Ghana Grid Company in Akosombo on April 23 further disrupted power transmission and worsened the fragile supply situation.
