The Ghana Police Service has arrested Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Akofena, in connection with a shooting incident involving his sister, former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo.
According to a police statement, Israel Safo voluntarily reported to the Regional Police Headquarters on June 22, 2026, a day after the incident. He was subsequently transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to assist with investigations.
Police said a search conducted at his residence in Kwabenya and on his vehicle led to the recovery of a large cache of firearms and ammunition. The items retrieved included 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 50 rounds of .45 calibre ammunition, 25 rounds of .40 calibre ammunition, several loaded magazines, and two Glock pistols, one of which is registered in his name.
Further investigations led to the arrest of two additional suspects, Nana Kwaku Afriyie and Kwadwo Safo Koomson, who are also assisting police with inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
All three suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before court on June 23, 2026. The Police Service says investigations are ongoing.
Background
The arrests stem from a reported shooting incident involving Adwoa Safo at a property linked to Israel Safo in the Greater Accra Region.
The incident comes amid an ongoing succession dispute within the Kristo Asafo Mission following the death of its founder, Apostle Professor Kwadwo Safo, in September last year.
The disagreement has triggered competing claims over the leadership of the church and its affiliated institutions, with legal proceedings already underway regarding the succession process.
In an earlier statement, the Kwadwo Safo family alleged that Adwoa Safo had gone to serve a court injunction seeking to halt an installation ceremony involving her younger brother, Israel Safo, when the confrontation occurred.
The family further claimed that gunshots were fired during the incident, allegations that are now at the centre of ongoing police investigations.
