Abdul-Samed Sulemana, popularly known as Awuche and widely believed to be Ghana’s tallest man, has died after battling serious health complications linked to gigantism.
Family sources confirmed that Awuche passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 27, 2026, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), where he had been receiving treatment following a deterioration in his health.
His death comes just weeks after renowned businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama offered to fully fund his medical treatment after an appeal was made on his behalf. The gesture sparked widespread public support and renewed attention to the health challenges faced by the Northern Region native.
According to reports, Awuche was initially admitted to the Baptist Medical Centre (BMC) in Nalerigu before doctors referred him to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for specialized care due to complications arising from his condition.
Sources close to the family disclosed that medical practitioners had recommended the amputation of his left leg after a severe infection reportedly caused significant damage to the limb. Despite efforts by healthcare professionals and support from well-wishers, he succumbed to his condition.
