Morocco have been officially crowned champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) overturned their final defeat to Senegal, following a controversial incident during the match.
The final, played on January 18, initially saw Senegal national football team secure a 1-0 victory over Morocco national football team. However, the game was marred by drama when Senegal’s players walked off the pitch in protest after a stoppage-time penalty was awarded to Morocco while the match was still goalless.
After a delay of about 17 minutes, play eventually resumed, with Brahim Díaz missing the crucial penalty. Senegal later clinched the win in extra time through a goal from Pape Gueye.
Despite the on-field result, CAF has now ruled in favour of Morocco after an appeal by the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), declaring the protest action by Senegal a violation of tournament regulations.
In its official statement, CAF announced that Senegal forfeited the match due to their conduct, and the result has been recorded as a 3-0 victory for Morocco.
The governing body cited breaches of Articles 82 and 84 of the competition rules, which stipulate that any team that refuses to continue play or leaves the field without the referee’s approval automatically loses the match and faces elimination.
As a result of the ruling, Morocco are now confirmed as AFCON 2025 champions, with CAF’s decision bringing closure to one of the most controversial finals in recent tournament history.
