Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has officially bid an emotional farewell to Ghana following the team’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging the country to focus on long-term structural reforms to secure the future of its football.
In a heartfelt Facebook post addressed to Ghanaians, the Portuguese tactician reflected on his short but eventful tenure, describing football as a game that teaches one simple lesson: “You either win or you learn.”
While expressing pride in what the team achieved, Queiroz admitted he was leaving with a sense that even more could have been accomplished.
“I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more. Reaching a higher level should never be the destination—it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions,” he wrote.
The former coach stressed that Ghana’s football future cannot rely solely on performances on the pitch but must be underpinned by strong institutions and a well-structured development system.
“The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch. Black Stars success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent,” he stated.
Queiroz thanked the leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for entrusting him with the national team, describing the opportunity as a great honour.
“To my President and Board, thank you so much for the opportunity to serve the Ghana National Football Team. It was an honour and privilege to serve the country and the Black Stars.”
He also paid tribute to his technical team and players for their commitment throughout the World Cup campaign.
“To my players and staff, my deepest gratitude for your courage, commitment and unwavering dedication to the team.”
Addressing Ghanaian supporters, Queiroz acknowledged that the Black Stars fell short of achieving their ultimate objective but maintained that the team succeeded in restoring pride and credibility on the global stage.
“To the fans, we cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage.”
He ended his farewell message on an optimistic note:
“Thank you, Ghana. The journey starts now. To the future.”
Queiroz was unveiled as Black Stars head coach on April 23, 2026, by Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams following the departure of Otto Addo. He was handed a short-term contract to lead Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Explaining the arrangement at the time, Mr. Adams said the contract was tied exclusively to the World Cup campaign, with any extension dependent on performance.
“The condition Ghana agreed was that we were going for a short-term contract, maximum four months, for the period of the World Cup, but the performance would determine any further agreement,” the Minister said.
Queiroz’s departure comes after Ghana’s World Cup journey ended in the Round of 32, where the Black Stars suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia, bringing an end to the Portuguese coach’s four-month spell in charge.
