Ghana had terrible leadership for 32 years - UP Communications Director

Communications Director of the United Party (UP), Solomon Owusu, has blamed Ghana’s underdevelopment on what he describes as decades of poor leadership.

According to him, since the inception of the 4th Republic of Ghana in 1992, none of the leaders in the country have not been the best.

Speaking on Joy Prime on October 17, the UP Leading Member said the country’s challenges stem from continuous governance failures over the years.

“What this country has been lacking is leadership. We have had terrible leadership in the last 32 years, hence our current deplorable situation,” he stated.

He criticised both major political parties, National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) for contributing to the country’s environmental and economic decline.

“If you look at what’s happening with our environment, it’s the result of all their actions and inactions that have contributed to its destruction,” he said.

Owusu added that Ghana’s repeated visits to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an evidence of such failure.

“All of them took us to the IMF. You don’t go to the IMF when you’re a healthy economy. So the mere fact that we have been to the IMF on 17 occasions tells you that they were not doing anything,” he argued.

“Their own actions and inactions are clear enough to tell you that they have failed, and we must tell them as it is,” he said.

He then called for a major shift in Ghana’s political structure to break away from the two-party dominance.

“We have to chart a good course for this country. There has to be a paradigm shift from the duopoly,” he urged.

“One of them has to go for us to replace them and to lead this country into prosperity, to bring together all the talents in this country that can develop it,” he added.

On October 16, 2025, the founder of the former Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, officially announced the group’s transition into a political party under the name United Party (UP).
