The Ghana Tertiary Education Commision GTEC) has asked the Acting Registrar of the Traditional Medicine Practice Control (TMPC), Yakubu Tobor Yusuf to provide his certificate or stop using title ‘Dr.”
According to them, they have the authority to evaluate and authenticate both local and foreign academic qualifications granted to them under Section 7(i) of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023).
In a letter dated 13th october 2025 ands signed by the Director General Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, GTEC wrote that they have taken note of TMPC’s Acting Registrar using the academic title ‘Dr. (MH)’ to refer to himself, which had not been granted approval.
They demanded that Yakubu Tobor Yusuf provides the following information and documentation for verification;
“(1) Clarification regarding your use of the thistle ‘Dr.’ including the full name(d) of the awarding institution(s), a copy of the relevant degree certificate(s), a copy of the official academic transcript(s).”
The letter went on to say that if Mr. Yusuf is unable to provide these documents, he should stop using the ‘Dr.’ title immediately.
“You must also provide verifiable evidence confirming its removal from all relevant platforms,” it added.
The platforms are included, but not limited to official documents, institutional or professional profiles, websites and digital platforms, letterheads and any other public or professional materials.
They further wrote that the action was also being communicated to the Ministry of Health, and gave the Registrar up to October 24 to comply with the directives.
