Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, has confirmed that advocates of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill have officially reintroduced it to Parliament for further consideration.
The bill, which aims to ban LGBT activities and criminalize their promotion, advocacy, and funding, was passed by the 8th Parliament but failed to receive Presidential assent under President Akufo-Addo’s administration.
In an interview with newsdesksgh.com on Thursday, February 27, Fordjour expressed his hope that President John Dramani Mahama would approve the bill once it is passed by the current Parliament.
“We—myself, Sam George, Hon Bedzrah, Hon Alhassan Tampuli, Hon Abdul Kabiru, and Hon Ekow Vincent—have reintroduced the bill, and we are pushing for its swift passage so that the President can give his assent,” he said. “The bill has been officially received, and the necessary processes will now begin.”
Fordjour emphasized that the bill’s reintroduction should not cause any delays. “It’s the same bill, and we expect a smooth and quick passage. Our supporters, including chiefs, imams, clergymen, and the coalition, remain firmly behind us, as does the Speaker of Parliament. Therefore, we are optimistic it will be passed promptly.”
