Ghana Parliament Could Soon Become Africa’s Most Transparent Legislature - Ayariga

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga says Ghana’s Parliament is steadily positioning itself as Africa’s most transparent legislature, revealing that the country currently ranks second on the continent for openness and public accessibility.

Mahama Ayariga stated that the recent reforms aimed at improving public participation and visibility of parliamentary work were beginning to gain international recognition.

Speaking during a Leadership Media Briefing on Friday, May 22, 2026, as Parliament resumed sitting, he said, “In Africa, we are one of the most open parliaments. In fact, we are number two in Africa. We aspire to become number one,” he stated.

According to the Majority Leader, Ghana’s growing reputation has been strengthened by deliberate efforts to make parliamentary proceedings more accessible to citizens, particularly through live television broadcasts and expanded media coverage.

He noted that although some rankings tend to favour countries operating bicameral legislatures, Ghana’s unicameral parliamentary system has still managed to earn strong recognition across the continent.

“There is an issue whether we should be put in the category of those who practise bicameral parliament. We have a unicameral Parliament. But they have number one, and we followed,” he explained.

Ayariga expressed optimism that the introduction of live broadcasts of parliamentary sittings could further improve Ghana’s standing in future continental assessments.

“Now that we have live television broadcasting of our proceedings, in the next rating they might probably review that and Ghana may climb to the top as a parliament,” he added.
