Ghana Facing Looming Water Crisis as Pollution Surges – Dr. Clifford Braimah

Dr. Clifford Braimah, former Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, has issued a stark warning that Ghana could face a severe shortage of potable water if urgent steps are not taken to tackle pollution of the country’s water bodies.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, April 28, Dr. Braimah highlighted the growing threat posed by rising levels of heavy metals in water sources, describing it as a major risk to the country’s long-term water security.

While illegal mining, widely known as galamsey, is often singled out as the main culprit, he stressed that it is only part of a much broader problem.

Dr. Braimah pointed to everyday human activities—such as improper disposal of waste by mechanics, electricians, and other artisans—as significant contributors to water contamination.

According to him, these pollutants are washed into water systems during rainfall, gradually increasing the concentration of harmful substances.

He emphasised the urgent need for stricter environmental management, improved waste disposal practices, and the protection of water catchment areas to prevent a potential national crisis.
