The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has reshaped his personal office and positioned former Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, as Chief of Staff, effectively making him a central figure in the emerging structure of his 2028 campaign.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, a seven-term Member of Parliament for Suame in Kumasi, previously served as Majority Leader and is one of the longest-serving lawmakers in Ghana’s Fourth Republic, having represented his constituency from January 7, 1997, to January 6, 2025.
Widely regarded as a respected and influential figure within the NPP, his appointment places him at the core of what is seen as the Bawumia 2028 campaign machinery.
The restructuring signals a strategic recalibration following the party’s 2024 electoral defeat, as Dr Bawumia reorganises his campaign architecture ahead of the next general election.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu is expected to bring extensive legislative experience, a strong grassroots network, and deep institutional memory to the role—assets considered crucial to the campaign’s rebuilding efforts.
During his parliamentary career, he served in both Minority and Majority leadership positions as political fortunes shifted in the House.
On the international front, he has held roles including Vice Chairman of the Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) and Deputy Chairman of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA International).
Other key appointments include Opare Ansah as Director in charge of Identifiable Activities, Peter Mac Manu as Director of Political Strategy, Fred Oware as Political Advisor, Nana Akomea as Director of Communication and Branding, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah overseeing Policy Coordination, assisted by Evon Hughes, Anthony Abayifa Karbo in charge of Organisation and Youth Inclusion, and Dr Ekua Amoako as Spokesperson.
