The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man, Michael Mensah, in connection with the murder of a student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.
According to a statement issued by the police, the suspect was apprehended on Sunday, June 15, 2026, at about 7:15 p.m. by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team following what authorities described as sustained intelligence-led operations.
Police said preliminary investigations indicate that on June 11, 2026, at approximately 6:48 p.m., Mensah, who reportedly claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the UCC hostel enclave.
Investigators believe he subsequently transported Avinu to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen before her death.
The circumstances surrounding the killing remain under investigation, with police assuring the public that further details will be communicated as the case progresses.
The arrest comes amid growing public concern over the safety of students and young women, with many awaiting answers regarding the circumstances that led to the death of the UCC student.
The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to remain calm and allow investigators to complete their work while ensuring that justice is served.
“Investigations continue and any further development will be duly communicated,” the police statement said.
