In 2028 we’ll still be talking about the 24 hour economy that never happened – Bawumia’s Spokesperson

In 2028 we’ll still be talking about the 24 hour economy that never happened - Bawumia’s Spokesperson

A member of the New Patriotic Party communications team and spokesperson for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Ekua Amoakoah, has criticised the Mahama administration’s flagship 24-hour economy policy, predicting it will remain unimplemented by the next general elections.

According to her, the 2028 elections will shift focus from campaign rhetoric to concrete delivery, as voters demand tangible results.

Speaking on Joy Prime and monitored by NewsDesksGH on February 18, Dr. Amoakoah said,

“The 2028 elections will be more about solutions it will not be about slogans. Because we’ve seen that a lot of the things they went on sloganiaring up and down, they’re having problems executing.”

She indicated that her assessment is based on closely following the government’s fiscal policy direction and budgetary allocations.

“We’re in 2026 now and I am a keep follower of their budget. I follow everything they do like my life depends on it. So I can sit here and quite confidently say we’re not going to get much out of the 24 hour economy.”

Dr. Amoakoah argued that despite two budgets being read since the National Democratic Congress Mahama administration assumed office, there is little evidence of concrete financial commitment toward implementing the policy.

“They have a very short time left. They’ve read 2 budgets. We’ve seen the policy documents for the 24 hour economy and so far it doesn’t look like there’s some serious determination on the part of the govt to get it done.”

She maintained that the absence of dedicated funding signals a lack of urgency on the part of the government.

“We can be sure that 2028 we’ll still be talking about the 24 hour economy that never happened,” she added.

Dr. Amoakoah further suggested that by 2028, voters would prioritise performance over political messaging.

“The voters at that time will expect more solutions. It will not be about slogans anymore. And at that point they will look at His Excellency Dr. Bawumia and see him as the man of ideas,” she said.

The governing National Democratic Congress has consistently defended the 24-hour economy policy as a transformative strategy aimed at boosting productivity, expanding job opportunities, and strengthening industrial growth.

However, opposition figures within the New Patriotic Party argue that implementation has been slow and lacks clear budgetary backing.

The 24-hour economy was a major campaign promise ahead of the 2024 elections, with the Mahama administration positioning it as a central pillar of its economic recovery agenda.
