The Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Gaming Commission of Ghana, Lawyer Lamtiig Apanga, has questioned the necessity of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) signing a peace pact ahead of its presidential primary, describing it as an indication of deep internal tensions within the party.
According to him, a party with the political history and experience of the New Patriotic Party should not have ever reached a point where a formal peace pact was required to ensure internal calm.
Speaking on Channel One Television and monitored by NewsDesksGH on January 28, Lawyer Apanga said, “You would expect that a party of the NPP would not have necessarily lead to a point where we would need a peace pact to be able to enhance peace in the party.”
He acknowledged that internal contests can naturally be competitive but argued that the intensity of the current exchanges within the party had gone beyond acceptable limits.
“We know for sure that when you have some of these contests where it is so tense there would be some exchanges here and there, but not to what we have seen,” he stated.
Lawyer Apanga further noted that the members of the party would need to work to reconcile and overturn some of the words they used against each other after the new flag bearer is elected.
He noted that following the accusations they have made against each other, the NPP cannot just change their stance and encourage Ghanaians to vote for whoever emerges as flag bearer during the next general elections.
“If you say all these things and then you come back and shake hands and come and stand on the stage to say Ghanaians should vote for this person. Don’t forget that you’re the same person who told us this person is not a good candidate because of ABC, in fact some of the words I can’t repeat on air.”
Lawyer Apanga however maintained that the NPP cannot sim against the NDC in the next elections.
“Nonetheless, any of the candidates that the NPP elects, I can tell you for sure that he’ll not be able to beat the NDC candidate,” he noted.
The New Patriotic Party is scheduled to hold its presidential primary on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
The five confirmed aspirants are former Assin Central Member of Parliament Ken Ohene Agyapong; Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong; former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe and former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum; and former General Secretary of the party, Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
Ahead of the primary, all five aspirants signed a peace pact, formally a Memorandum of Understanding, on Thursday, January 22, 2026, committing themselves to maintaining unity within the party before and after the internal elections.
