Minority does not see Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as tolerant head of the judiciary - Minority Leader

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin says the Minority Caucus does not consider Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie a tolerant head of the judiciary and added that they will therefore not participate in the Chief Justice’s “thank you tour.”

According to him, the Minority has come under sustained attacks following its criticism of the processes that led to the Chief Justice’s nomination, a development he said raises concerns about the tolerance within the judiciary.

Speaking at a press briefing in Parliament on January 26, Afenyo-Markin claimed the Chief Justice appears to be embarking on what he described as a tour to express gratitude for his appointment.

“We have seen that my Lord Baffoe-Bonnie and his management are all over at the various ministries including Jubilee. Is he on a thank you tour, thanking the government for appointing him as a Chief Justice?”

He further stated that the Minority was not convinced of the Chief Justice as head of the judiciary.

“We hear today he’s coming to Parliament. We the Minority don’t see him as a tolerant head of the judiciary because members of the Minority came under attack when we criticised the processes leading to his nomination.”

“We will therefore not be part of his thank you tour. If he wants to engage us, our offices are open. He should come and engage us and we will let him know things that we find wrong.”

Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie was officially sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana on November 17, 2025, following the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama.

Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s vetting process on November 13, 2025, faced opposition and a walkout from Minority MPs due to the legal challenges surrounding the removal of the former Chief Justice.
