Police pose as buyers to arrest man attempting to sell 3-year-old son for GH¢1 million

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a man in Akwatia in the Eastern Region for allegedly attempting to sell his three-year-old son for GH¢1 million.

The suspect, identified as Coffie Agyemang, is a resident of Kwamang in the Denkyembour District.

The Public Relations Officer of the Eastern South Police Command, DSP David Fianko Okyere, confirmed the arrest and said investigations have commenced to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.

He was apprehended by the Akwatia Police Command following intelligence gathered by the police.

According to the police, officers posed as interested buyers after receiving information that the suspect was seeking to sell the child due to severe financial hardship.

Residents in the community reportedly disclosed that the suspect had confided in a friend about his intention to sell his son, prompting the information to reach the police.

Acting on this ntelligence, some police officers went undercover and feigned interest in purchasing. They engaged the suspect, who allegedly agreed to sell the child for GH¢1 million.

He was arrested at a designated meeting point after bringing the child to conclude the transaction.

Other sources even alleged that the suspect intended for the child to be killed for ritual purposes, after which he would retrieve the child’s body and create the impression that the child had been murdered.

Police say these claims form part of the ongoing investigations.

The child will also be placed in protective custody as investigations proceed.
