Former Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency, Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, has expressed gratitude to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for appointing him to lead the agency.
According to him, his tenure at the Environmental Protection Agency was made possible by the confidence reposed in him by the former President, whom he credited for placing him in a position where he could excel.
Speaking on Metro TV as monitored by NewsDesksGH on January 9, Dr. Kokofu responded to public perceptions about his leadership at the agency.
“Some people have said Kokofu is EPA and EPA is Kokofu. Well, thanks to God Almighty and to the President then, who saw wisdom in putting me there.”
He said beyond receiving an appointment, being positioned appropriately was key to his performance at the Environmental Protection Agency.
“I’ve always been very grateful to my party New Patriotic Party , and particularly to the President because it’s one thing getting an appointment and one thing being put at where you can excel or perform.”
Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu served as Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency from 2020 until the conclusion of his tenure in March 2024.
During his nearly four years at the helm, he introduced several institutional reforms aimed at strengthening environmental governance in Ghana.
Among his key initiatives was spearheading the process to transition the Environmental Protection Agency into a more empowered Environmental Protection Authority, a move intended to enhance the institution’s regulatory and enforcement capacity.
Under his leadership, the agency’s staff strength grew from about 300 to more than 700 personnel, alongside the establishment of 40 new district offices across the country to expand its nationwide presence.
Dr. Kokofu also served as Special Envoy for the Ghana Presidency of the Climate Vulnerable Forum, where he represented the country in international climate negotiations and supported the establishment of an independent Climate Vulnerable Forum secretariat in Ghana.
