The final funeral rites of legendary Ghanaian highlife musician Daddy Lumba is taking place at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi today, Saturday, December 13, 2025.
Family members, friends, fans, and industry colleagues have gathered at Baba Yara for a final farewell to the celebrated musician.
Born Charles Kwadwo Fosu on September 29, 1964, Daddy Lumba, who passed away on July 26, 2025, was well loved and respected by people from all over.
Daddy Lumba is widely regarded as one of the greatest highlife artistes of all time, with a career spanning over four decades. His professional music journey began in the mid-1980s after travelling to Germany, where he initially planned to study engineering but continued to pursue his passion for music.
He released his debut album, Yereye Aka Akwantuo Mu, in 1989 and went on to produce more than 30 albums. His extensive catalogue includes classic hits such as Aben Wo Aha, Sika Asem, Mesom Jesus, and Hye Wo Bo.
Over the years, he won several major awards, including multiple Artist of the Year honours at the Ghana Music Awards.
The funeral comes after months of legal disputes involving the musician’s family members.
An initial injunction was filed by Akosua Serwaa Fosu, who claimed to be Daddy Lumba’s only lawful wife. Daddy Lumba’s family however recognised Priscilla Ofori Atta, also known as Odo Broni, as the legitimate widow to perform the funeral rites.
The court later recognised both women as valid spouses of the late musician.
The maternal family subsequently filed a separate injunction, arguing that they had been excluded from funeral planning.
On Friday, December 12, the Accra High Court initially granted the injunction, halting the funeral and preventing the release of the body from Transitions Funeral Home.
However, the court ordered the applicants to pay GH₵2 million as an undertaking for potential damages, in line with practice directions for injunctions filed close to burial dates. When the applicants failed to meet the deadline, the court lifted the injunction, clearing the way for the funeral to proceed.
Despite the burial going ahead, legal issues surrounding Daddy Lumba’s estate remain unresolved.
The maternal family has filed a separate suit raising allegations of unauthorised withdrawals from the Daddy Lumba Memorial Foundation account, which was set up to receive public donations for the funeral.
The plaintiffs are seeking accountability and changes to the management of the fund. These substantive matters are expected to continue in court even after the burial.
Today however, focuses on celebrating the life, music, and enduring legacy of Daddy Lumba, whose influence on Ghanaian highlife and popular music remains unmatched.
