The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H. E. Ambassador Tong Defa has highlighted significant gains in Ghana and China relations, noting rapid growth in trade, investment, education and people-to-people exchanges over the past two decades.
According to him, GHACHIFA has carried out numerous activities regarding economy, culture, education, among others and he revealed that over 300 Ghanaian students are currently studying in China.
Ambassador Tong Defa, speaking at the Ghana-China Friendship Association’s end of year press soiree in Accra on December 10, praised the association’s efforts in strengthening economic, cultural and educational ties.
“For 25 years, our bilateral friendship has flourished under the care of the GHACHIFA. As a leading organization focusing on bilateral friendship, GHACHIFA has carried out numerous activities regarding economy, culture, education, among others, held symposiums and media interviews on bilateral exchanges and the and people-to-people exchanges one-China principle, all of which has made valuable contributions to promoting bilateral friendship.”
The Ambassador noted that China remains Ghana’s largest trading partner and a major source of foreign investment
He noted, “In 2024, bilateral trade reached an unprecedented high of 11.8 billion US Dollars, marking a Hundreds year-on-year growth of 7.1%. Thousands of Chinese enterprises have invested locally, creating substantial employment while advancing homegrown industrialization.”
He further touched on China’s contribution to educational development in Ghana, revealing that Chinese universities have partnered with local institutions to establish three Confucius Institutes.
“Chinese universities have established three Confucius Institutes in partnership with their counterparts in Ghana, enabling over ten thousand Ghanaian students to study Chinese language. I can tell you, there are over 3000 Ghanaian students now studying in China,” he said.
He added, “The 14th Batch of Chinese Medical Team is providing healthcare services and introducing Chinese medical new horizons for mutually beneficial cooperation, which will also create new opportunities for China-Ghana relations.”
