The Minority in Parliament is demanding an apology from the Speaker of Parliament Hon. Alban Bagbin and Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, for the referral of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to the Privileges Committee, describing it as an international embarrassment.
According to the Minority, the petition against the Minority Leader must also be withdrawn immediately, and Parliament should reinstate him to Ghana’s delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament.
The petition against Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin was filed by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who accused him of defying a parliamentary resolution that removed him from Ghana’s ECOWAS delegation.
Speaker Alban Bagbin formally referred the matter to the Privileges Committee for investigation on Thursday, November 27.
Speaking to the media outside Parliament on November 28, Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei outlined a series of demands following the Speaker’s decision.
“One, the immediate withdrawal of the privileges committees petition. It is gross abuse of process and an affront to Justice,” she said.
The Deputy Minority Leader further argued that Ghana’s reputation had been dented by the controversy and demanded an apology from the Speaker and Majority Leader.
“A public apology from the speaker and majority leader to ECOWAS and to the people of Ghana for the international embarrassment they caused.”
The Minority also called for steps to reverse Afenyo-Markin’s removal from the continental body.
“The passage of a resolution restoring Honourable Afenyo-Markins name to Ghanas ECOWAS delegation and affirming Ghana’s commitment to the rule of law under Article 75 of the constitution.”
She accused government actors of targeting the Minority Leader and demanded a stop to that as well.
“An end to the coordinated persecution of the minority leader by the Attorney General’s office, NDC operatives and party foot soldiers.”
Patricia Appiagyei finally demanded accountability for threats made earlier this year by the First National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress.
“The prosecution of Chief Sofo Azorka for his public threats.”
Chief Sofo Azorka had earlier issued threats against Afenyo-Markin during a confrontation at the Akwatia by-election in September 2025.
