The Deputy National Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Rashid Tanko Computer, says the party and government are not considering any move to remove the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) or Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng from office.
According to him, the OSP is currently doing exactly what the government expects of it which is recovering stolen state resources.
Speaking on Joy News and monitored by NewsDesksGH on November 26, he said that no decision had been taken following a public petition demanding the Special Prosecutor’s dismissal.
On November 25, a group led by private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu and Apostle Abraham Lincoln Larbi marched to the Jubilee House to submit a petition demanding the immediate removal of Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.
The group urged the President to either terminate his appointment or dissolve the OSP entirely, accusing the office of failing to effectively deliver on its mandate.
However, speaking on the matter, Tanko Computer said, “We haven’t taken such a decision as a government. The President in his last message concerning the OSP said he will strengthen that office.”
“He will make sure that he gives them all the support that they deserve to work. Because they’re doing what we want them to do, that is recover the loot,” he added.
He clarified that they have also not taken any decision on Kissi Agyebeng as well.
“As to the person occupying that office, government has not taken any such decision,” he stressed.
Dr. Tanko Computer however acknowledged the right of citizens to petition the Presidency.
“It’s the right of the petitioners to petition. If you think that an officer of state is not living up to standards or what is expected of him you have the right to petition and they’ve done that.”
He said the matter now rests with the Presidency.
“For now, I have the belief that what the President said the last time still holds and that he’s strengthening the independent bodies, anti-corruption bodies.”
He gave examples of developments in some of these institutions, saying the President has strengthened the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and that the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice(CHRAJ) is also actively going after people.
“It’s an exciting time to be a Ghanaian under his excellency John Dramani Mahama, not to interfere in their operation. We just want them to do their independent work,” stressed Tanko Computer.
