Presidential aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has warned the members of the party that they risk losing more seats in Parliament if they do not rally behind a different leader.
According to him, some members of the NPP insist on presenting former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer even though it led to a loss in the last elections.
Currently on a Unity Tour of the Eastern Region as part of his campaign for the NPP’s flagbearer position ahead of the January 2026 primary, Ken Agyapong argued that party arrogance and a failure to listen to the electorate have already cost the party dearly.
Speaking on November 18, Ken Agyapong noted the significant decline in NPP’s parliamentary majority over recent years.
“After the 2016 election, we went to Parliament in 2017 with 169 seats,” he stated.
He went on to say that they again lost more seats after the 2020 and 2024 elections, attributing losses to internal divisions and arrogance.
“We lost 32 seats. It happened again, our arrogance. We left 137 all the way down to 87 seats.”
Ken Agyapong pointedly criticized the continued push for Dr. Bawumia, who was the party’s flagbearer during the most recent election cycle.
“Ghanaians have said that NPP, your candidate we don’t want him today, we don’t want him tomorrow,” he said.
He expressed frustration that despite this apparent public rejection, some party members are insisting on presenting the same candidate again.
“If you bring him, if you’re not careful, the 87 seats we have now, next time it will be left with 35,” he warned.
Agyapong positioned himself as the candidate with broad public support, claiming that Ghanaians are calling on the party to rally behind him.
“Party people, do we want power or we want a flagbearer that cannot win general elections?” he questioned.
“I will plead, let us listen to what Ghanaians are saying.”
Former MP Ken Ohene Agyapong is one of five candidates set to contest the NPP presidential primary scheduled for January 31, 2026.
The other aspirants include:
Current MP for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong
Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
Current MP for Bosomtwe and former Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum
Former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
