Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has called for an apology from those who she says wrongfully accused her of sponsoring violence in past elections.
According to her, these accusations led to her attack, describing the incident as one that nearly cost her her life.
Current Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okennor, has consistently accused Mrs. Koomson of being behind violent incidents during the 2020 elections period, particularly a shooting incident at a voter registration centre in July 2020.
Hon. Okennor had stated that she saw men associated with Hawa Koomson at the registration centre and alleged that shots were fired by Koomson’s group, killing one of her supporters, identified as Yusif Idris, and injuring others.
However, Minister for the Interior Muntaka Mohamed-Mubarak shared updates from the task force handling the case at a press briefing on Tuesday, November 4 regarding investigations into past electoral violence.
“The task force observed that the honourable Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okennor denied that her convoy was attacked,” he stated.
“She was nowhere near the scene of the incident. Persons who were involved in the incident have avoided speaking with the task force.”
He added that investigations by the task force were still ongoing.
In response, Hawa Koomson took to her Facebook account on November 5 to react to the Minister’s briefing.
“I wish to formally acknowledge a recent press briefing conducted by the Honorable Muntaka Mubarak, Minister of the Interior, regarding the status of investigations into election-related violence associated with the 2020 and 2024 elections.”
She noted that the task force’s findings had validated her long-standing claim that she had no involvement in the violence.
“Concerning the disturbances that transpired on the night of the elections in the Awutu Senya East Constituency, the findings reported by the investigative team have substantiated my initial assertion that I bear no responsibility for the violence, which tragically resulted in the loss of an innocent life.”
Hawa Koomson said the false allegations against her led to further attacks that endangered her life.
“It is pertinent to highlight that the unfounded accusations, orchestrated and led by the then parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress, Ms. Phyllis Naa Koryo, precipitated an unjustified and unprovoked attack against me during the Ablekuma North by-election a few months ago, an incident that nearly cost me my life.”
She then urged her accusers to take responsibility and apologise.
“While she may have derived some advantage from these baseless allegations, I sincerely hope that those who have wrongfully accused me will possess the integrity to issue a full and unequivocal apology for the trauma I have endured.”
