Communications Director of the United Party (UP), formerly Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, says Ghana’s current crop of parliamentarians does not reflect the best minds the country has to offer.
According to the leading member of the party, the ministers in position are not the best shot for the country.
Speaking on Joy Prime on October 17, 2025, Owusu questioned whether the existing Members of Parliament (MPs) truly represent the country’s finest potential.
“If I were to ask you that if you go to Parliament, do you believe for a moment that the parliamentarians we have are our best shot as a country? The answer will be an emphatic no,” he said.
“They don’t represent the total quality of Ghanaians. A lot of them do not represent the best for this country,” he stressed.
He added that many people capable of bringing ideas to the governance of the country are rarely encouraged to do so.
“If we were doing our politics right, a lot of fine minds would’ve been very encouraged to enter our political system,” he stated.
Mr. Owusu said the newly formed United Party aims to change that by creating an inclusive and open political environment.
“We are going to create the enabling environment, the atmosphere that will attract these minds,” he explained.
He noted that some talented individuals may not want to be in active politics but still have valuable ideas to contribute.
“We have a lot of quality minds in this country who have the technical know-how to be able to support our developmental agenda,” he said.
“In the UP, we accept all shades of opinion. If you want to encourage someone to join your political party, you must be ready to accept opinions, not just impose your opinions on them. That is why most of them stay away,” he added.
Owusu concluded by reiterating that Ghana’s leadership must reflect its best talent.
“I don’t believe that the ministers that we have are our best shot,” he said.
On October 16, 2025, the founder of the former Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, officially announced the group’s transition into a political party under the name United Party (UP).
