Sam George must apologize for wasting Ghanaians time – Minority

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has called on the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, to apologise to Ghanaians failed and deceptive negotiation with MultiChoice Ghana on DStv pricing.

According to them, the minister had wasted the nation’s time and resources, abandoned his original demands for a 30% price reduction.

At a media briefing on October 2, they said they were seeking to highlight the minister’s “populist and disingenuous”strategy regarding the DStv impasse.

“Minority Caucus addresses a critical issue concerning our communications, digital technology, and innovation landscape. This matter is fundamental to consumer protection, fostering a healthy environment for investors, and respecting the rights of the Ghanaian people,” they stated.

They recalled that since August 2025, the minister had been demanding a 30% cut in DStv subscription fees, citing wide disparities between Ghana and other African countries.

“Since August 2025, Hon. Sam George has been advocating for a 30% reduction in DStv fees. He highlights the significant price disparity between the premium bouquet, which costs $83 in Ghana, compared to just $29 in Nigeria.”

They further recalled how the minister subsequently set up a committee chaired by himself to engage MultiChoice, but the outcome announced which he on September 29 fell short of expectations.

“The display of disingenuity and deceit in what we properly termed a ‘settings’ update was seen by all of you,” they noted.

According to the Minority, the minister abandoned his original stance and tried to present a standard promotional offer as a policy breakthrough.

“But instead of answering to Ghanaians the legitimate questions we posed to him, such as why he chose to prioritise Multichoice public relations efforts over his price reduction agenda.”

The caucus stressed that the promotional package introduced by the minister was not new and had been running long before his intervention.

“It is well-known that MultiChoice and DStv has consistently run promotions. Since January 13 of this year, they have been offering a promotion called Step Up which allows subscribers to upgrade their subscription to the next level at no additional cost in several countries. In July 2025, they reiterated this promotion and also reduced their decoder prices to show appreciation for both existing and new subscribers.”

They argued that the minister’s handling of the negotiations showed poor judgment.

“It is important to note, therefore, that this is not the action of someone who, having failed to deliver on his promises, is attempting to take cover in these promotional offers.”

The added, “This impasse reflects the minister’s lack of mental rigour in understanding and conducting negotiations.”

The Minority concluded by making their demands known.

“We demand that the Minister render an unqualified apology to Ghanaians for the waste of the nation’s time and resources on this venture,” they stressed.

They then demanded that Sam George account for fines previously levied on DStv, and ultimately asked him to either resign or be dismissed.
