Fifteen Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Eastern Region who have openly endorsed former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer have issued a statement responding to claims made by Dr. Bryan Acheampong.
Dr. Acheampong, who is also competing for the NPP flagbearership, had suggested during his constituency tour in Achiase on September 25 that some 15 NPP MPs who declared support for Dr. Bawumia later reached out privately to downplay their public endorsement.
“After their press conference, they even called me and said, ‘Dr., you know how it is.’ I responded, ‘The youth of today, you like to play,’” Acheampong said.
However, in a statement dated September 30, 2025, the MPs described the claim as false and divisive.
“There is absolutely no truth in Hon. Bryan Acheampong’s assertion that some of us privately called him after our press conference to downplay our declaration. We challenge him, in the spirit of truth and accountability, to publicly name the MPs he alleges contacted him. Until he does so, his claim remains nothing but a fabrication,” the statement read.
The MPs also rejected Dr. Acheampong’s suggestion that he exchanged text messages with Dr. Bawumia after the endorsements.
“Our checks prove that there have been no such exchanges between Dr. Bawumia and Hon. Acheampong. Failure to produce this evidence will only expose his claim as a deliberate falsehood designed to hoodwink delegates,” the statement added.
The MPs further accused Dr. Acheampong of causing disunity in the party by suggesting that monies disbursed during the 2024 campaign came from his personal resources and were meant for polling station executives.
They clarified that the funds were provided by financiers supporting Dr. Bawumia’s campaign and only facilitated by Acheampong in his role as Eastern Regional Campaign Coordinator.
“The false claim that he personally provided these amounts for the benefit of polling station executives is not only distasteful but also an attempt to create confusion in the party by falsely portraying party officials as unaccountable,” the statement noted.
They then alleged that what eventually reached MPs was less than what was agreed upon, with some having to supplement from their own resources.
They are also urging Bryan Acheampong to retract his claims immediately and desist from actions meant to undermine the party’s unity.
“We, the undersigned Eastern Regional MPs, remain firm, united, and unwavering in our support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. We consider Hon. Bryan Acheampong’s allegations as baseless, divisive, and calculated to serve his personal agenda,” the statement said.
“We therefore call on him to retract his false claims immediately and desist from any further attempts to undermine the unity and integrity of our great party.”
