NPP has no right to critique us – Senior Presidential Staffer

A Senior Presidential Staffer, Rosemond Obeng, says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has no right to criticise the Mahama administration on the fight against illegal mining or galamsey.

According to her, the new government is taking measures to undo the damage caused under the NPP.

Speaking on Metro TV on September 29, Rosemond Obeng said the NDC government inherited dangerously high turbidity levels in Ghana’s water bodies when it took over from the NPP in January.

“About the turbidity levels of the water, ordinarily at most it should be between 0-500. But we came to meet water turbidity levels from 5,000 to 12,000,” she disclosed.

She described the situation as both dangerous and unforgivable.

“And that is the state they plunged us into,” she added.

According to her, the Mahama administration is working to address citizens’ concerns about environmental destruction.

“We are listening to people, we are taking the concerns,” she said.

However, she stressed that the NPP should refrain from attacking the government over the crisis, arguing that they caused the crisis in the first place.

“But NPP as a party, they don’t have any moral right whatsoever to lecture us, to educate us, to even critique us,” she stressed.

She added, “Because we are trying to undo the harm they did to the environment. So they shouldn’t. They should just keep quiet.”

Illegal mining remains one of Ghana’s most pressing environmental challenges, with widespread destruction of rivers, forests and farmlands.
