Commercial transport operators have issued a one-week ultimatum to the Ministry of Roads and Highways to urgently repair the deteriorating Pokuase–Nsawam road or face a massive protest.
They have threatened to park their vehicles and embark on a massive protest if the Ministry fails to act within the stipulated time.
According to a statement signed statement signed by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), and other commercial transport operators, the groups described the road’s condition as “unmotorable” and a danger to motorists, commuters, and residents along the stretch.
They said the poor state of the road has forced drivers to incur high operational costs due to frequent maintenance, replacement of damaged spare parts, and shortened vehicle lifespans.
The statement read, “The situation has become a predicament not only for commercial transport operators but all motorists using the road to destinations far and near, including those to Eastern, Ashanti and other Regions in the Northern Sector, impacting daily lives and economic activities.”
The operators noted that in an earlier engagement with the Minister for Roads and Highways, they were assured the situation would be resolved within six weeks, but the timeline has since elapsed without any action.
“If no meaningful action is taken within one week, the GPRTU of TUC, GRTCC and other commercial transport operators will park our vehicles and embark on a protest against the government till our concerns are addressed,” the statement warned.
They further appealed to motorists, commuters, and residents along and beyond the corridor, as well as all Ghanaians, to join the protest should it become necessary.
“We call on all motorists and commuters who struggle to navigate this unmotorable road, residents along and beyond this corridor who have to deal with increased travel time and constant struggle to get vehicles to their destinations during inclement weather, and all Ghanaians to join us as a civic duty to compel authorities to act accordingly,” they urged.
The Pokuase–Nsawam road serves as a key route linking Accra to parts of the Eastern, Ashanti, and Northern regions, and its worsening condition has become a major concern for road users.
