An air ambulance has crashed into a residential area in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, killing at least six people and injuring two others.
AMREF Flying Doctors confirmed the accident in a statement signed by CEO and Accountable Manager Stephen Gitau.
They stated, “At this time, we are cooperating fully with the relevant aviation authorities and emergency response teams to establish the facts surrounding the situation. Our immediate focus is on the safety and well being of those on board, and we are providing full support to their families and colleagues.”
Amref Flying Doctors said the Cessna plane took off from Wilson airport on Thursday afternoon and was headed to Hargeisa in Somalia when it crashed in the Mwihoko area of Nairobi.
Four people on the plane were killed, including doctors, nurses and the pilot. as well as another two people on the ground, while two others were seriously injured.
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the National Police Service are leading search and rescue operations at the site.
A team from the Air Accident Investigation Department (AAID) has also been dispatched to determine the cause of the crash.
This incident comes one day after Ghana’s own helicopter tragedy, sparking concerns about aviation safety across the continent.
