The Asomkahene of Anum-Asamankese and member of the Parliamentary Press Corps, Nana Kwaku Agyei Kodie I (privately known as Samuel Osei Agyei), has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who died in the helicopter crash on August 6.
In a statement, Nana Kwaku Agyei Kodie I described Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed as “a brother, a confidant, and a true gentleman,” and reminisced upon their close bond developed over the years.
“He didn’t just call me Chief, he treated me like one,” Nana Kodie I wrote.
“Time and time again, he would buy me smocks, beautiful Fugu, to express his love and appreciation. Each one was more than fabric; it was a gift from the heart, a symbol of a bond grounded in mutual respect and brotherhood.”
Their final exchange came just days before the tragedy, when Murtala promised to send a leather mat used by chiefs, after Nana Kodie requested one during a casual encounter in Parliament.
“Now, that message, that moment, lives on as our final exchange.” It read.
Hon. Murtala Mohammed was one of eight victims of the Ghana Air Force Z 9 helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region, alongside Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate, Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
“Tamale Central has lost a true son. Ghana has lost a principled leader. But I… I have lost a brother,” Nana Kodie wrote.
He concluded the tribute with prayers for the late MP, saying:
“Rest in peace, my brother the Honourable. May Allah grant you Jannatul Firdaus.”
