Ghana begins immediate evacuation of citizens from Iran

The Government of Ghana has announced the immediate evacuation of all Ghanaian nationals living in Iran, in response to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.

In a statement posted on Facebook by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the decision was taken in the supreme interest of protecting Ghanaian lives as tensions in the region continue to rise.

According to the Minister, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect to guarantee the safety of diplomatic staff. The evacuation process, being conducted via land borders, covers all Ghanaian diplomats, students, professionals, and other citizens residing in Iran.

“In the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, the Mahama Administration has decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran, to guarantee the safety of our embassy staff, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect,” the statement read.

The government is also closely monitoring developments in Israel, another flashpoint in the ongoing conflict.

While a full evacuation from Israel has not been announced, Mr. Ablakwa disclosed that embassy operations in Tel Aviv have been scaled down to the barest minimum. Ghanaians living in Israel have been urged to maintain close contact with the consular department for guidance.

The Foreign Minister emphasized that government remains committed to ensuring the safety of all its nationals abroad.

Ghana also used the opportunity to renew its call for peace, urging both Israel and Iran to embrace diplomatic dialogue and end hostilities.
