President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation to collaborate with the National Communications Authority (NCA) to immediately restore the broadcast operations of sixty-four (64) radio stations recently shut down due to regulatory action.
In a statement issued and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Spokesperson to the President, who also serves as Minister for Government Communications, President Mahama emphasized the importance of balancing regulatory compliance with the preservation of media freedom.
He cautioned that forcing radio stations to halt operations while they await authorisation regularization could create unnecessary barriers to free expression.
President Mahama has tasked the Minister to engage the NCA in establishing a reasonable timeframe within which the affected stations can regularise their authorisation while remaining on air.
The directive underscores the administration’s commitment to safeguarding democratic principles and ensuring that media houses are not unduly silenced in the name of regulation.
