Zuarungu SHS closed down due to tribal clashes

The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has directed the immediate shutdown of Zuarungu Senior High School until further notice.

This action follows fierce confrontations between Frafra and Kusasi students on Sunday, July 20, over an alleged mobile phone theft.

The altercation resulted in the destruction of some campus structures by fire and increased tensions throughout the school.

According to reports, law enforcement has apprehended four students in connection with the incident.

However, one suspect allegedly escaped while being taken to the station, seizing a police officer’s magazine in the process.

In response to the incident, security forces, including the military and police, have provided escort services to students from Bawku back to their hometown under strict protection to prevent potential retaliatory attacks.

Authorities are working to restore peace and investigate the matter.

The regional minister’s decision seeks to enable authorities to assess the full extent of property damage and restore normalcy.

The school remains shut until further notice, and probes into the clashes are ongoing. Efforts are being made to ensure the safety and security of all students and staff.
