You should have stayed silent – Kwaku Ansa-Asare rebukes Sophia Akuffo

Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has criticized former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, accusing her of breaching her oath of secrecy as a member of the Council of State after publicly commenting on the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

His comments comes at the back of a statement by Sophia Akuffo arguing that Justice Torkornoo did not receive a fair hearing, describing the process as being treated “like a treason trial.”

She further insisted that the decision had weakened the judiciary, saying the allegations against her successor were not strong enough to justify removal.

But Kwaku Ansa-Asare strongly disagreed, describing her remarks as “inappropriate” and a breach of the trust reposed in her by Ghanaians.

“All I can say is that our eminent and distinguished former Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana has nodded a little,” Ansa-Asare said in an interview on TV3’s NewsCentral.

“By subscribing to the oath of secrecy as a member of the Council of State, she is bound by a sacred duty to remain silent on such matters. What she has done is in clear breach of the trust the good people of Ghana have reposed in her.”

He suggested that Sophia Akuffo’s comments indirectly referenced privileged knowledge from Council of State deliberations, cautioning that such disclosures undermine confidence in governance and the judiciary.

“My good advice to my distinguished former Chief Justice is that in matters like this, silence is the best option,” he added.
