We’ll get a shoddy outcome - Yendi MP urges Mahama not to rush 24 hour Economy

Member of Parliament for the Yendi Constituency, Abdul-Fatawu Alhassan, has cautioned President John Dramani Mahama against attempting to fully deliver the 24-Hour Economy policy within his four-year mandate.

According to him, the policy is long-term in nature and pushing to achieve all its objectives within a single 4 year term could undermine its quality and impact, resulting to what he described as shoddy outcome.

Speaking on Metro TV on February 20, as monitored by NewsDesksGH, the Yendi Member of Parliament stressed that the President should focus on laying a strong foundation rather than rushing outcomes.

“I am not in support of a government rushing things through simply because it has 4 years. This was the major problem we had last year especially from our opponents saying, ‘you promised 24 hour economy, we’re almost done with one year, nothing’.”

“His excellency John Dramani Mahama should not be focused on delivering the entire policy objective of the 24 hour economy within this 4 year mandate.”

He warned that compressing such an ambitious programme into a short political timeline could lead to poor execution.

“Otherwise if you push leaders into that corner, we will be getting shoddy outcomes. That whole policy, if you look and understand it very well, it is long term in nature, if we really want to derive the actual benefits from it.”

While acknowledging that the President has only four years under the current mandate, Abdul-Fatawu Alhassan said the focus should be on setting the right pace and structures for continuity.

“He should set the tone for that accelerated development that we’re all anticipating,” he stated.

He further described as a positive step the decision to spend time establishing a structure to oversee implementation of the policy.

According to him, taking about a year to develop the framework and establish the authority responsible for supervising the rollout was a good move.

His comments come a day after President Mahama assented to the 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill, 2025, on February 19, officially paving the way for the implementation of the flagship policy.
