Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team and campaign member for Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, says the party will gladly welcome Alan Kyerematen back if he decides to return.
Alan Kyerematen, a founding member of the NPP, left the party for the second time in 2023 to form the Movement for Change, which has recently transformed into a political party known as the United Party (UP Plus).
According to Dr. Palgrave, he is confident that the UP Plus leader would return and be a major part of the restructuring of the NPP.
Speaking on Channel One TV on October 20, Dr. Boakye-Danquah said the emergence of UP Plus should serve as a reminder to the NPP to reconnect with its core principles.
“It’s a clear reminder that we need to go back to the basics of where we started from,” he said.
He added that while the NPP is not threatened by the new party, he doubts it will survive beyond Kyerematen’s leadership.
Dr. Palgrave stated that he believed the UP Plus would have the same fate at the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) which he called ‘short-lived’.
“We are not threatened at all by UPP, we would wish them well. I am not too sure it will live beyond Alan Kojo Kyerematen as you saw with CPP,” he stated.
According to him, Alan Kyerematen remains a key figure in the NPP’s history and will always have a place in the party.
“He is a founding member of the New Patriotic Party. We would welcome him back into the party,” Boakye-Danquah said.
He expressed confidence that under a Kennedy Agyapong led NPP, Alan Kyerematen would play a role in rebuilding the party.
“When Kennedy becomes the flagbearer of the NPP and we have a new change and new fresh ideas, Alan Kyerematen would be a formidable person that would be part of the reconstruction,” he said.
Boakye-Danquah described Kyerematen’s political roots as aligned with the NPP’s tradition and values.
“A fruit does not fall far from its tree. If you look at it, he’s not too far from what, as a political party, we have stood for over the years,” he noted.
He added that the formation of UP Plus was, in his view, a message to the NPP to remain true to its founding ideals.
“His starting of the UP Plus clearly signals that he wants to send a strong signal to the NPP that we must be reminded of where we have come from and make sure we don’t drift from it,” he said.
