We should rather commend Sam George – Adom Otchere to Minority

Former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, Paul Adom Otchere, has urged the Minority in Parliament to reconsider their criticism of the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, over the recent DStv subscription standoff.

According to him, the minister deserves commendation for securing more value for Ghanaian subscribers, regardless of the process.

Speaking on Metro Tv on October 3, he said,

“It is important for us to understand that Sam George has achieved something for us. No matter how we look at it he has been able to get DStv to give us a fair value.”

He explained that the arrangement gives subscribers significant benefits for the same fees.

Drawing an analogy, he said, “If I was buying a particular kenkey for 3 cedis and one day they say for the same 3 cedis I will give you fish, it means that I’ve gained.”

While defending the minister, Adom Otchere admitted that the announcement could have come from regulators rather than directly from Sam George.

“When we are in political or public office, as much as possible we should be able to insulate ourselves from direct confrontation and direct controversy,” he noted.

He further noted that Sam George took on an issue many have long complained about.

“Over the years we’ve all complained about DStv. Who has dared to stand up? So if Sam George has done that for me, sitting here, I clap for him.”

Adom Otchere concluded that instead of vilifying the minister, Ghanaians should appreciate his efforts.

“I think we should rather commend Sam George for his fight than vilify him the way we are going.”

The Minority yesterday called for Sam George’s resignation, accusing him of abandoning his demand for a 30% reduction in DStv subscription fees and instead presenting MultiChoice’s existing promotional offers as a policy breakthrough.

They described his handling of the matter as “populist and disingenuous,” insisting he had wasted national resources and misled Ghanaians.
