Political Analyst and scientist, Dr. Kwame Asah Asante has called on political parties to encourage more women to contest for top leadership positions.
According to him, the lack of women in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate race is a worrying sign.
Speaking on Joy News on October 8, he said Ghana can learn from countries like Namibia.
“Just recently you saw Namibia coming up as the only country in the world to have three too political heads being women.”
He went on to state that the President, the Vice President and Speaker of Parliament are women.
“Not only that but if you look at their cabinet, about 57% are women,” he added.
“They’ve been able to breach the gender gap by 81.1% emerging as the best country in Africa and 8th in the world in terms of gender sensitivity.”
Dr. Asah Asante described the example as a shiny and commendable one.
“Look at it in Ghana. What is the case here?” he asked, expressing concern.
He said he is focusing on the NPP as they have an upcoming flagbearer election in January 2026.
“NPP is a mass party. And there are people in all walks of life in the party. [Different] Ethnic, religious, civil groups and the rest.”
“But look at the last primaries that they held in 2024. 10 contestants, no woman.”
He however praised the party for being sensitive to gender issues.
“That one I can credit them, but I want to see more. No woman took part in the contest,” he stressed.
“This year, you have 5 contesting, no woman. It is worrying. It’s a worrying sign,” lamented Dr. Asah Asante.
He further urged true NPP to support women in changing this situation.
“I will expect them to lift up their game so that we have more women coming in to contest.”
“NPP has a whole lot of human resource so I want them to be able to support women so that they come to the fore”
