We must honour Dr. Mohammed’s memory by continuing the work he began – Environment Ministry

The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation has paid a glowing tribute to its late sector minister, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, describing him as a leader, development enthusiast, and father figure.

According to the tribute read by the ministry, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed’s vision for a greener and more technologically advanced Ghana must not perish with him.

Delivering a touching tribute at the state funeral held for the perished persons at the Black Star Square this morning, Friday August 15, the Ministry expressed the loss they are feeling, saying “This tragedy has robbed the Ministry of a leader, a development enthusiast, and above all, a father,”

They recalled that Dr. Murtala Mohammed assumed office in February 2025 with the vision to build a robust and sustainable environmental management, science and technology ecosystem.

“His aspirations for a greener future for generations unborn inspired his One Child, One Tree project launched on World Environment Day this year,” they read.

They described him as more than a minister but a great mentor whose influence extended beyond his official duties.

“He operated an open-door policy, receiving everyone from high-ranking officials to ordinary citizens with the same warmth and respect. He would often say with that charming smile, ‘I don’t have a door,’ ” the tribute noted.

They further urged that his work must continue despite his untimely passing.

“We must honour Dr. Mohammed’s memory by continuing the work he began. His vision for a more sustainable, technologically advanced Ghana must not perish with him. We owe it to his memory and to the seven other souls who perished alongside to carry forward the programmes and initiatives he championed,” the Ministry said.

Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed perished on August 6, 2025, in a military air crash in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, which killed a total of eight people including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and crew members Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Today, Ghana lays these fallen heroes to rest.
