A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, Wonder Madilo, has denied claims made by New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications member Awal Mohammed about the state of Ghana’s economy at the time of handing over in January 2025.
In a discussion on 29th September on Joy News, Awal Mohammed insisted that the economy the NPP left behind was on the path to recovery.
However, speaking on the same panel, Wonder Madilo strongly rejected that assertion, saying that the NPP had left the incoming NDC government with ‘nothing’.
According to him, uncontrolled expendi under the NPP’s tenure caused the collapse of the economy.
“The reason for which the economy crashed was because of their uncontrolled expenditure,” he argued.
Mr. Madilo continued, “To the extent that the Bank of Ghana had to give you about 20 billion Ghana cedis just to support your budget.”
He then pointed to the Covid-19 levy introduced under the previous government as further evidence.
“Under their tenure, if indeed Covid was one of the reasons why the economy collapsed, they had introduced a Covid tax which we’ve been paying till today,” he noted.
Wonder Madilo added that the NPP should not mislead the public about the true state of affairs.
“So don’t sit on TV and make it look as though under your tenure it was very well and the NDC came to inherit a very good economy,” he said.
Mr. Madilo further stressed, “We inherited nothing and they know that very well.”
