Walewale MP criticises the military’s response to journalist assault

The Member of Parliament for the Walewale Constituency, Mahama Tiah Abdul-Kabiru, has criticised the Ghana Armed Forces over its response to the recent assault on a journalist in Walewale, accusing the military of ignoring the suffering of civilians who were also attacked during the incident.

According to him, the military’s statement focuses narrowly on the journalist’s case while downplaying or completely omitting the alleged assault on several innocent civilians and the destruction of their property.

In a Facebook post on January 28, the Walewale MP reacted to a press release issued by the Ghana Armed Forces following the assault of a Media General correspondent in the North East Region.

“The Ghana Armed Forces have decided to respond and in doing so they have ignored the plight of the score of civilians who were equally assaulted and their vehicles destroyed,” he wrote.

He further criticised what he described as a selective account of events by the military.

“This selective amnesia and crassness of the full account of the unrefined atrocities against civilians in Walewale township is strikingly and stinkingly noticeably.”

“The journalist like the many other people deserve justice and the Ministry of Defense should behave and act professionally, doing justice to all manner of persons,” he added.

His comments come after the Ghana Armed Forces issued a statement announcing an investigation into the alleged assault on a journalist, which reportedly occurred on Monday, January 26, 2026, at the outskirts of Walewale in the North East Region.

In the statement the military said the incident occurred in an area experiencing heightened insecurity due to recent attacks on public transport resulting in deaths and injuries.

“The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to alert the general public that these current happenings in the North East and Upper East Regions have resulted in heightened levels of insecurity which will occasionally necessitate the conduct of military operations without notice,” the statement said.

It further urged the public to cooperate with security agencies.

“The general public is hereby informed to cooperate with the Ghana Armed Forces and other security agencies.”

The assault on the journalist has sparked public condemnation and renewed calls for accountability over the conduct of security personnel in conflict-prone areas, particularly in Walewale and its surrounding communities.
