The Communications Director of the United Party, Solomon Owusu, has criticised the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic, describing it as the worst Parliament in Ghana’s history and blaming Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, for what he considers its failings.
According to him, the conduct and output of the current Parliament have fallen far below expectations, eroding public confidence in the country’s legislature.
Speaking during a year in review discussion on Joy Prime on December 22, as monitored by NewsDesksGH, Solomon Owusu said the problems of the House could be traced largely to leadership failures.
“It’s the worst parliament and I blame Speaker Bagbin for that.”
He referenced the disruptions that occurred during the vetting of ministerial nominees, including Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
“They only went there to destroy chairs, tables and microphones. You saw that incident.”
According to the United Party communicator, the behaviour of Members of Parliament has been disappointing given their role as national leaders.
“People that ought to know, people that are supposed to be a shining example in the society, they’re fighting there.”
However, Solomon Owusu said Parliament still has time to redeem itself, noting that the House has three more years to complete its term.
“Going forward, they have three more years to go. They must engineer some level of confidence in Ghanaians that we are here to do the work of the nation.”
“What we’re being sold is not the best in parliament these days,” he stressed.
