There weren’t many Dagomba, Muslim women to look up to - Top Law student

The 2025 overall best graduate of the Ghana School of Law, Latifa Teiya Fuseini, Esq., has expressed her desire to mentor and inspire young women, particularly those from northern Ghana and Muslim backgrounds, who look up to her success.

According to her, she did not have many women of her kind to look up to while growing up, which now drives her to be a source of guidance and encouragement for others, especially girls.

Latifa Teiya Fuseini was recognized at the call to the Bar ceremony in Accra on October 10, where she received the John Mensah Sarbah Memorial Prize for emerging as the top student among 824 new lawyers.

Speaking on Pan African Television on October 13, the overall best lawyer said she intends to use her achievement to uplift others who have reached out to her for mentorship and advice.

“I’m planning to create a group and put them in to share materials, advise, and all that. I just want to be there for them, try to help them,” she said.

Reflecting on her journey, she noted that there was little representation for her growing up.

“Growing up, there weren’t a lot of female Dagomba women, Muslim women to look up to,” she shared.

“So I aspire to be that person, especially for my Dagomba sisters, my Muslim sisters.”

Latifa expressed her gratitude for the support and well-wishes she has received since her achievement.

“The outpouring of love has been so beautiful. I am just so touched by it,” she said.

She however added that judging by the tone of messages she has received, it seems like many girls do not believe they are in a position to achieve such a feat.

“I think we need to push young girls. We need to encourage them. Most of them don’t think they can achieve this,” she urged.

She further encouraged the public, especially women and girls, saying that there is nothing they cannot achieve.

“There’s nothing that you can’t do. And there are no barriers for women anymore. So, just take advantage of that, put yourself out there, do you every best.”
