A leading member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), legal practitioner and energy consultant Kwame Sanaa-Poku Jantuah, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to make a collective decision on who should lead the party into the next election to avoid internal division.
The ex Interior Minister’s comments come after 63 Members of Parliament from the NPP issued a Statement declaring their support and endorsing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s next presidential candidate.
According to Kwame Jantuah, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia carries a lot of negatives that could affect his chances of leading the New Patriotic Party (NPP) successfully in the next elections.
Speaking on TV3 on October 24, Mr. Jantuah cautioned that the move of the MP’s, considering the results of the last elections.
“All this standing, with the kind of defeat they had, they should go and sit in a room and decide who should go so that they all support him. What they’ve done is just going to bring division,” he said.
He warned that it might be over for the party if the NPP has another devastating election, especially if the NDC brings someone as effective as President John Dramani Mahama.
“Ghanaians want good work, Ghanaians want accountability, Ghanaians want to see that the country is moving,” he noted.
“Vice President Bawumia, he might win, but can he win the country? That is what they should look at.”
Mr. Jantuah also mentioned some positives of other NPP flagbearer hopefuls, namely Kennedy Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong.
“Somebody like Ken, he has a loud mouth and he can talk well, he can convince delegates. Bryan Acheampong, he might have the wealth in terms of money to do what he wants to do,” he said.
He questioned Dr. Bawumia’s political leverage, saying his association with the former President could work against him.
“What does Vice President Bawumia have? The fact that he was Vice President? And who was he Vice President with? President Akufo-Addo. How do the people see President Akufo-Addo’s tenure?” he questioned.
He added, “there are quite a lot of negatives where Vice President Bawumia is concerned.”
