Veteran Journalist Kwesi Pratt has delivered an assessment of the state of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), saying the party is in “a bad state.”
Kwesi Pratt expressed concerns about the party’s performance in recent years, particularly in the wake of the 2024 general elections and subsequent by-elections.
He made these remarks on Metro TV on September 17 while addressing matters regarding the NPP such as Former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent apology and the upcoming flagbearer elections in January 2025.
“The party is in a bad state,” he stated.
He further explained that in terms of electoral performance, the NPP has experienced significant setbacks
“If you take elections in our history, the only election in which the performance was worse than the last election was the 1951 election,” noted Kwesi Pratt.
Kwesi Pratt added that the NPP have already lost two by-elections this year.
He further warned that unless there is serious introspection within the party, the NPP could continue to experience electoral losses.
“It appears that the party will continue to suffer some significant defeat in the coming years or so” he said, adding, “It’s not a doom prophecy, it’s reality. It’s there in our face.”
According to him, the NPP needs to reform its leadership in order to achieve future successes.
“I think that this party needs to have people who are sober, reflective, can imagine and design the better future for the party,” he stated.
He also criticized the current leadership for ignoring the wisdom and experience of former party stalwarts.
“Paul Afoko has said it, even former president Kufuor has hinted that they don’t seek advice from them,” he said, questioning how the NPP intends to build the party up without listening to the input of former leaders.
