A member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communications team, Awal Mohammed, has said that the NPP handed over a recovering economy in January 2025.
According to him, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) inherited an economy that was picking up, contrary to their claims.
Speaking on JoyNews on September 29, Awal Mohammed quoted President Mahama’s remark at the UNGA saying “Covid-19 erased two decades of poverty reduction.”
“It should tell you that indeed what we were saying, we have been vindicated by the same President Mahama,” he said.
According to Awal, the statement affirms the NPP’s long-standing position that Ghana’s economic difficulties stemmed mainly from global crises.
“He admitted that what we were saying at a point in time, that Covid-19, Russia-Ukraine and some few other challenges were the reasons we were where we were at that time,” he noted.
He further insisted that by the time the NPP left office, Ghana’s economy was stabilising.
“When you check inflation, it was 54% in December 2022. From that time, it came down to 23%. So, it didn’t really go up again,” he noted.
Awal Mohammed also cited other economic indicators to back his claim.
“When you check all the economic fundamentals, before we left off it was coming down. The IMF and World Bank predicted that we may even end this year with a single-digit inflation. This is something that we had started.”
“You inherited an economy that was picking up, that had turned the corner,” he stressed.
His comments come after several comments from the NDC over the state of the economy at the time of transition.
Members of the party have repeatedly said that the country was in a poor state when it was handed over in January 2025.
