The Attorney General has disappointed me – Inusah Fuseini

Lawyer and Former Minister, Inusah Fuseini, has expressed disappointment in Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, over remarks made at the Ghana Bar Association’s (GBA) Annual Conference in Tamale.

At the conference held on September 14, Dthe Attorney General said the GBA has been inconsistent and bias in its advocacy.

He argued that the association remained silent during petitions filed for the removal of the Commissioner of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the Electoral Commission Chairperson but became vocal in the recent case involving the former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

“The question we have to ask ourselves is what changed?” he asked. “The three occupants were all women of significant repute and members of our noble profession. The three committees established pursuant to Article 146 complied with the constitutional procedure to the letter, and yet the bar found its voice only in relation to the third petition.”

“Coincidentally, the voice of the bar amplified the voice of the opposition,” added the Attorney General.

Reacting to these comments on Metro TV on September 15, Inusah Fuseini, expressed his disapproval.

He touched on their relationship and stated that he worked with Dr. Ayine on Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee.

“I’ve always held him in high esteem until he was appointed as Attorney General of this republic. He has disappointed me,” he said.

Inusah Fuseini criticised Dr. Ayine’s style of leadership, accusing him of prioritising political communication over legal responsibility.

“To begin with, this is an Attorney General who tries his cases in a public court of opinion instead of going to the court,” he argued.

He further implied that Dr. Ayine’s actions at the Bar Conference reflected partisanship rather than statesmanship.

“Today he’s waged onto another forum of doing the usual NDC communications. I don’t get the head and tail of his admonishment to the Ghana Bar Association except to remind us of things they didn’t do and how politically exposed they are,” Fuseini said.

Mr. Fuseini added, “He himself is a politician, but that forum where he was speaking, he was speaking as a leader of the bar, as an Attorney General, and for that matter one would have expected him to act as such rather than wearing the NDC colours.”

He further stressed that he finds Dr. Ayine’s tenure disappointing, and pointed to what he considers biased conduct in time in office.

“His actions over time, in the last eight months of being Attorney General, we may cite him for being biased. That’s why I am saying his tenure is a total disappointment to me.”

“He must speak not like he is on an NDC platform, but he should be speaking as an Attorney General,” he said.
